The Gareth Perspective: Online Gaming

Online Gaming

I have been thinking through the past days about the online accessibility of all systems. Has it been a great investment or has it been a downfall on certain consoles. Here is my opinion.

The online service started with the dream cast (Nintendo had plans for online communication in early records similar to the x box live system but neglected due to biased opinions and budget) and only a majority of fans played online with the main attraction, phantasy star online. Still them it still did not blossom as people thought it was just going to flop and continued playing online via pc. But now the rules change thanks to big companies such as Microsoft investing into a system with server technology towards gamers online.

With the growth of its service increasing, Sony moved into the area (still Nintendo neglected online connectivity) and second party developers created memorable games such as Socom us navy seals.

But still, Microsoft was in the lead with matchmaking, friend lists and better communication. Even with its plans for the 360 live services, Sony is still far behind from trying to beat its popularity. With online gaming, developers have built great features to give their games more replay value (another pro about online gaming) however, some games and even online services require a certain sum of money (a downfall if I say so) in order to test its full potential.

Is online gaming a good thing (better communication, clans, more entertainment) or a bad idea, (cheaters, threat for viruses, LAG!)?

What’s your opinion?
