Games That Need Re-Making: Rambo

Okay, now Rambo was never really known for its appeal as a video game property. The games that have been produced based on the Rambo films really haven’t done much to blow anybody away. However, maybe its time for a real hardcore, action packed video game based on the Rambo franchise.  All of the elements are there: gunplay, stealth tactics, survival skills, this game needs to be made. How can it be made the right way? That’s simple.

Make the standard gameplay like Splinter Cell, using the environment as a means of camo, hiding in trees, and so forth. Like in the original Rambo film, First Blood. If you decide to use firearms, the view could switch to Resident Evil 4 or Gears of War style over the shoulder view.

The truly original mechanic to the game would be the ability to set traps. This is a key element to First Blood, and has rarely been done before in video games (Tecmo’s Deception being one of the few). Combining these three styles of gameplay would create replayability, as there would be many ways to tackle a situation.

There are also a variety of missions one could perform. From infiltration to interrigation, saving hostages to vehicle based missions, there is no limit to the variety a property like Rambo could hold. Combine these elements with cutting edge next-gen graphics and Sly Stallone’s likeness and voice-acting, and you could have a stellar game.

With the fourth Rambo film headed to theaters soon, this is the perfect time for a Rambo game to arrive on store shelves, as long as it isn’t a cheap cash in. Not all licensed games are bad, look at Riddick or The Thing for example. Oh, and if anyone should be in charge, let Pete Wanat get his hands on this.
