Virtual Console: The Good, The Bad, and The Must Have Vol. 3
This time, we will cover the classic NES, and its many hits and misses.
THE GOOD:
- Blades of Steel- The classic hockey game that established hockey as a sport well fit for video game treatment. This game is still a blast to play, and remains one of the best sports games for the NES.
- Adventure Island- An excellent example of why old school sidescrollers ruled in the early days of gaming. This game features colorful environments and a cool protagonist called Master Higgins.
- Super Mario Bros. 2- Often ridiculed for being too far different from its popular predecessor, this game really isn’t a bad game. It just suffers from too many changes in formula.
- Donkey Kong- The arcade classic that so many lost their change to.
- Super Mario Bros. and SMB: Lost Levels- The original and its Japan only predecessor, both of which are well worth playing.
THE BAD:
- Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link- While Super Mario Bros. 2 doesn’t quite deserve all of the flack it gets, this game does. A true disappointment if you enjoyed the first.
- Zanac- The gameplay is very dated, as is the horrible Engrish text.
- Castlevania 2: Simon’s Quest- A terrible sequel to the awesome original.
THE MUST HAVE:
- The Legend of Zelda- The incredible original Zelda title that launched one of the best series of all time.
- Super Mario Bros. 3- Quite possibly the best Mario game ever.
- Metroid- Incredible environments (for the time) and awesome gameplay.
- Kirby’s Adventure- An excellent platformer starring Kirby.
- Punch Out!!!- The awesome boxing game featuring protagonist Little Mac against a cadre of goofy bosses.
