Virtual Console: The Good, The Bad, and The Must Have - Vol.1

The Nintendo Wii has many interesting features that separate it from the competition. It is nearly impossible to talk about the Wii without mentioning it’s motion sensitive controls, or it’s many wacky peripherals. However, one of the most exciting features of the Wii is its Virtual Console. Essentially, you buy classic games for Wii Points (1000=$10).  There are a lot of games for various systems available, and it would be easy to spend a lot of money if one doesn’t know what games to spend it on. I am here to make sure this doesn’t happen.

Let’s begin with one of the great systems of the 16-bit era, the SEGA Genesis.

The Good:

Altered Beast- Solid action-adventure game in which you use power ups to become various creatures and destroy zombies, dragons, etc. Action-Adventure

Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine- Cool Columns-like puzzle game featuring characters from Sonic the Hedgehog. Puzzle

Golden Axe- Side scrolling brawler with different characters to choose from, and various beasts to ride. Kind of a medieval Streets of rage. Action-Adventure

Ristar- Interesting take on the old 2d platformers. Use your stretchy arms to overcome various obstacles. Platformer

Streets of Rage- One of the best side scrolling beat em’ ups, take down the thugs of the city and restore peace. Action-Adventure

The Bad:

Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle- Boring, boring, boring, there are many better platformers out there. Get them instead. Platformer

Ecco the Dolphin: Tides of Time- Terribly disappointing sequel to the much better Ecco the Dolphin. Action-Adventure

Virtua Fighter 2- A 2d version of a 3d game. Oh, and its bad. Fighting

Other titles to avoid are the sequels to both Streets of Rage, and Golden Axe. The originals are the best, the sequels get tedious and repetetive, so don’t bother.

The Must-Have:

Sonic the Hedgehog- If you have never played this game. shame on you. Do it now! It’s one of the greatest games of all time, period.  Platformer

Ecco the Dolphin- Really original game in which you control a dolphin trying to save th sea. Warning: this game is HARD. It is however, very rewarding. Action-Adventure

Columns- One of my favorite puzzle games. Simple, addictive, and not just another bad Tetris clone. Puzzle

Gunstar Heroes- One of the best 2d shooters of all time. Make sure you grab a friend, this game is even better co-op. Shooter (2d)

Toejam and Earl- A hilarious, pop culture laden romp. Two of video games greatest characters. Action-Adventure

Comix Zone- Very cool side scrolling fighter, where you are trapped in a comic book. Fun, exciting, and very underrated. Action-Adventure

Kid Chameleon- Cool game where you use power ups to become various characters with their own unique powers, using these powers to get past obstacles is what makes this game so great. Platformer

Ghouls n’ Ghosts- Great sidescroller in which a knight must save a damsel in distress from demons, ghosts, and other nefarious creatures, oh and epic boss battles too. Action-Adventure

Shining Force- An amazing RPG, worth another go around. This game is truly excellent. RPG

The rest of the Genesis games in the Virtual Console can be ignored. They are nothing special, I promise.  Oh, and try to remember, these are my opinions. So please don’t email me about disliking/liking a game you disagree with.

Yes, I did beat Ecco the Dolphin a few years back. It is definitely one of the hardest games I have ever played. Columns is one game I still play to this day as well, it never grows old. Thanks for the feedback, and keep checking us out!
